Welcome John Cassidy to the show! Cassidy is the owner and driver of Last Ditch Racing, a rally racing team based in Maine. John also serves as a Neurosurgery and Spine Physician Assistant at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center.
Although Cassidy’s primary job is not racing, he does have a huge passion for speeding around in the woods behind the wheel of his Subaru WRX. This is why John and Justin spent most of the episode talking rally.
The two discuss the history behind Last Ditch Racing, how it started and what it looks like currently. They go on to chat about the New England Forest Rally, based in Newry, Maine and Climb to the Clouds, based in Pinkham Notch, NH. Sadly, NEFR has been cancelled for 2020 and Climb to the Clouds has been rescheduled for 2021.
While local rally is the focus, Justin and John touch on the broader sport of rally and what has made it what it is today. The two talk on athletes at the top of their sport who come over to rally for a thrill in something new. Those athletes include Dave Mirra (Pro BMX), Bucky Lasek (Pro Skateboarder), Travis Pastrana (Pro Moto X) and Ken Block (co-founder of DC Shoes).
Rally racing is a unique and amazing sport to watch. Cars racing extremely fast through roads that typically are made for you to get home from work on and not designed for high speed racing. Additionally, rally cars are road-worthy. This means between “stages” cars must drive down major roads.
Lastly, the two just touch on the SpaceX and Nasa launch over the weekend!
