We go back to Justin Soderberg covering the UMass Lowell River Hawks for this week’s episode, as we welcome Devan McConnell to the show.

McConnell is the High Performance Director for the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League. In his role, McConnell aims to maximize performance, minimize injury risk, optimize fitness and nutrition levels and execute comprehensive training regiments for all Coyotes and Tucson Roadrunners players and club prospects.

However, the two first met while Devan was seeing as the Director of Sports Performance for the River Hawks, where he was from 2011-2019. During his time in Lowell, McConnell was part of the staff to lead the River Hawks to five NCAA Tournament appearances, three Hockey East Conference Championships, two Hockey East regular season titles and a trip to the Frozen Four.

Following his time with the River Hawks, McConnell was the Director of Performance Science & Reconditioning Coach for the New Jersey Devils, also of the NHL.

In addition to his performance positions, Devan is the author of Intent: A Practical Approach to Applied Sport Science for Athletic Development, along with Justin Roethlingshoefer.

The two reminisced time with UMass Lowell and their run to a few Hockey East Championships, working in the NHL and how to get your sports performance career started.
